Ode to the Bardo of Aging

ODE TO THE BARDO OF AGING

What is aging without suffering, I wonder.
I’m sure there is such a thing.
Oh yes!  It’s here every moment
…If I can just remember that.

This very moment, moment to moment.
How does it feel without thoughts, without judgments?

I see my sun-freckled face and notice wrinkles
That weren’t there yesterday.
It’s OK –
Seeing my face just as it is
Reminds me of my experiences in the bardo of this life,
And the wisdom I’ve gained along the way.

My aches and pain remind me:
Take care of myself – without judgment, with compassion.

I feel my grief with my whole being.
Loss upon loss.
My heart cracks open.
Into the genuine heart of sadness – and joy.
